Sometimes we find a dish in a restaurant that deserves special mention. Other times, we discover a street snack that absolutely needs to be tried. And every now and then, something utterly bizarre comes along and we play lab rat for you. In all those instances, there’s Grab a Bite!
What: Hormel’s Ham on the Go (精制火腿随意包)
From Where: This option was found in the Family Mart at Dapu Qiao (打浦桥）Station, but is probably available in random Kedis, Lawsons and Alldays as well.
Why you should grab a bite: In this day and age, we’re used to getting what we need instantly and in an easy to carry format. The sandwich, breakfast wraps, those long sushi rolls and Go-gurt are all great examples of how this principle can be successfully implemented. Somebody at Hormel decided that the next big thing for convenience packaging was… ham slices.
And so you have Ham On The Go – three slices of Hormel smoked ham meat in a shrink wrap decorated by images of people on the go – breakdancers, running office people, trendy fashionistas and snowboarders. Do you take every activity to the EXTREME? Then here’s the ham for you.
Strangely enough, they didn’t really bother making the ham particularly easy for people on the go to eat. In fact, the only difference between Ham on the Go and the regular Hormel Ham slices you’d find in a Carrefour is… well, the pictures of people on the go. When you open the package, you have to watch for the preservative liquid it’s packed in, which could drip out onto your rockin’ ski jacket/business suit if you’re not careful.
So how does it taste? Salty, slightly sweet (it’s possibly honey smoked) and like ham. It’d be a delicious addition to your sandwich – just don’t… um, eat it on the go.
