Sometimes we find a dish in a restaurant that deserves special mention. Other times, we discover a street snack that absolutely needs to be tried. And every now and then, something utterly bizarre comes along and we play lab rat for you. In all those instances, there’s Grab a Bite!
What: A Strawberry-Banana crepe
From Where: Momi&Toy’s Creperie at the basement of the IFC mall in Lujiazui
Why you should grab a bite: The crepes from Japanese import Momi&Toy’s look absolutely mouthwatering just from the pictures – like roses made out of fresh fruit, whipped cream and crepe batter. Luckily for all of us, the finished product matches the advertisements to a tee.
We got the strawberry banana crepe with caramel and chocolate sauce, which Momi&Toy’s declares is its best seller. We knew just from looking at it that it’d be yummy, but we didn’t expect the amount of care that would be put into its creation. The person manning the booth deftly whipped the batter on a griddle, transformed it into a fresh crepe, squeezed frilly lines of cream in semi-circle shapes and then began folding ingredients into it like origami.
She finished making our piece of art in about a minute. It took us another minute to figure out exactly how we were supposed to eat it (we pulled down some paper on the side and unceremoniously stuffed it in our mouth – cream got everywhere).
Besides the strawberry banana, one of the more expensive crepes on the menu, there was a great looking mango version and several savory ones as well. Enjoy this as a very light meal or as a dessert to any of the other options in the IFC’s basement.
