Over the last few weeks, the plight of kidnapped children has been high on the consciousness of Chinese society as Professor Yu Jianrong continued his campaign of getting netizens to photograph or video child beggars. The campaign turned up a handful of success stories now, most notably the dramatic reunion of Peng Gaofeng and his son Wenle.
Well here’s another story that is both heartening and heartrending at the same time. If you don’t believe in retribution, maybe this video will change your mind…
It’s late night and a scrawny little boy is out on the streets begging for money. A driver passing by takes pity on him and gives him some money, but unhappy with the one or two RMB he’s been given, the boy asks for 10RMB and will not let him go till he does. It did not take too long for a crowd to gather, and while everyone’s discussing what to do with the poor little boy, his “minder” shows up.
Through various hand gestures, the seemingly malnutritioned boy indicates to the people that have gathered around that this man has been physically abusing him, inflicting cigarette burns on him, and giving him very little food. He is able to hear, but unable to speak, suggesting that, like the fate of many of the kidnapped children in China, his tongue has been cut off by someone.
Sensing his day of salvation had finally come, the boy takes it all out on the man, kicking him, burning him with cigarettes and slapping him with his shoes. The crowd had to intervene before he got too carried away. By this time the police had arrived, and the video ends with the boy and his abuser getting taken away in a van.
Unfortunately, we have no information where this scene took place, and what happened subsequently. While the boy is finally free from the clutches of his abuser, this is no doubt this is just the first step he will take on a long journey home. Hopefully his parents will see the video somewhere on the internet, and come take him home.
