Obama announced this morning that he plans to nominate US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke as the new US ambassador to China, replacing Hunstman who resigned amid rumors of a planned presidential bid. Locke was the first-ever Chinese-American Commerce Secretary, the first-ever Chinese-American state governor (of Washington State, represent!) and will now become the first-ever Chinese-American China ambassador (pending approval from the Senate.)
Locke was born in Seattle to Cantonese-speaking parents. He holds a BA from Yale and a law degree from Boston University. He has worked in international business law, particularly in Chinese-American trade (for Seattle giants Boeing and Microsoft) and is expected to have both the political and business connections necessary to take on the job.
