It looks like the Foreign Ministry might have made its claim that there were no Chinese casualties in the Japanese earthquake a little too soon.
According to Shanghai Daily: “Some 100 Chinese students in Ishinomaki City in Japan could not be reached at the moment after the devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday, said officials in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province today.”
“The officials tried to contact the students who were from Wenzhou by phone, but could not dial through, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported today.”
Ishinomaki lies in the heart of the Miyagi prefecture which has borne the brunt of the tsunami. Many cities along the coast here have been completely flattened, and a death toll of up to 10,000 is expected in Miyagi alone.
Another 40 Shandong trainees remain unaccounted for in the neighbouring Iwate prefecture.
