Here we are again, folks, bringing you our weekly roundup of the best live music around town! And HOLY GOD there’s a lot of it this week. Forget Wednesday and Thursday, this week’s Midweek Music Preview is zeroing in on Friday and Saturday, where there’s enough talent squeezing onto Shanghai stages to fill a month of concerts. These are all the top picks, but head over to our Calendar if you’re looking for more!
RAINBOW DANGER CLUB CD RELEASE @ LIVE BAR Our editor’s pick for this weekend goes to local band Rainbow Danger Club’s CD release, happening up at Live Bar on Friday evening. Yeah, there’s SO much amazing music happening, but we are excited for this one the mostest! RDC is a big favorite on the local music scene and they’re releasing their first full-lenth album, called “Where Maps End.” You might remember their cover-art competition a month or two back. They’ve been described as magical, epic, melodious, majestic, suspenseful, haunting, raucous, hook-laden and irresistibly fun. Experimental rock, if you’re looking for a label. For a taste, download their 2010 EP for free here, or for their new stuff check out their Myspace or Douban. These guys put on a great show EVERY show, and are absolutely worth the trip up to Hongkou. Support by Pairs, Friend or Foe, the Dudettes, and VJ Tina Sprinkles. 35RMB entry gets you a free CD!

BESNARD LAKES @ YYT (JUE FESTIVAL) JUE continues this week with the Besnard Lakes at Yuyintang. I have a feeling many a heart will be torn, as we don’t get too many quality indie acts making the trek to China these days. Besnard Lakes hails from Montreal, and sounds like this, an eerie, retro kind of rock. Their first-ever China tour carries the tagline “Like the Beach Boys when it’s calm, and Queen when it’s crunchy.” Read more about them on their JUE profile. Support by Triple Smash.
60RMB Presale/80RMB door // 9pm // Yuyintang // 851 Kaixuan Lu, near Yan’an Xi Lu (凯旋路851号, 近延安西路)
VITALIC @ THE SHELTER (JUE FESTIVAL) JUE also brings beatz to Shelter this Friday, flying in Frenchman Pascal Arbez-Nicolas aka Vitalic, who plays “ballsy dancefloor bangers that’ll rough you up, gently.” JUE profile here. Disco visionary, shaper of electonica, metal-disco warrior, call him what you will, one thing’s for sure: THERE WILL BE DANCING. Oh, and event organizers are saying the show starts exactly 30 min after the 10pm doors. Yeah, that’s like noon in Shelter time, but you guys can set your alarms and scoot on over there earlier than 1am for once. Support from The Horses.
80RMB // 10pm // The Shelter // 5 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu (永福路5号, 近复兴西路)
MAYBE MARS SHOWCASE @ ZHEJIANG DREAM FACTORY (JUE FESTIVAL) The Maybe Mars label has carried some of the most popular names in Chinese rock, and this year is no different. They’ve teamed up with JUE to bring us a fantastic showcase Saturday night: synthy punk bands Snapline and AV Okubo, as well as two of our favorite Shanghai acts, Duck Fight Goose, and Pairs! (More info over at JUE.) Should be a big one.
50RMB presale/80RMB doors // 9pm // Zhi Jiang Dream Factory // 4/F, Building B, New Factories, 28 Yuyao Lu, near Xikang Lu (余姚路28号，同乐坊内， 近西康路)
HEDGEHOG ALBUM RELEASE @ YYT One of Beijing’s finest rock acts returns to Shanghai to pack out Yuyintang once again. Hedgehog returns and they’re bringing some new material. Known to bring a great show, they’ll be in town promoting their new album (called something along the lines of “Sweet with a Side of Murder”.) Support by Naohai. The doors open a bit earlier tonight, at 8:30pm.

THE LONGEST NITE @ THE MIXING ROOM And if that’s not enough, there’s a literal marathon of music happening over at the Mercedes-Benz Arena’s Mixing Room, where local bands will supposedly be providing us 12-straight hours of punk/electronica/what-have-you. Eight bands on the roster, along with various STD DJs for support. Beijing band Bigger Bang plays alongside six Shanghai bands: Tian, The Lanterns, Yu-Guo, Triple Smash, Pink Berry and Candy Shop. International act Motor rounds things out. Get your tickets presale for 100RMB, or 150RMB at the door, includes a drink.

BANDIT’S PARTY/TSUNAMI RELIEF CONCERT @ LUNE Unfortunately pushing up against all of this is the Bandits tsunami relief concert at Lune (more options on how to help from Shanghai here.) Originally planned as a free concert, following the devastation in Japan last week they decided to up entry to 20RMB, all of which will go to relief efforts. Should be a great party (originally called the “Happy Funny Party”) and will feature The Beat Bandits (surf/garage), the always-entertaining Dudettes (Shanghai comedy-rockers), Hotter Than Teppanyaki (Latin/fusion party), and Sal & Upnavala Groove (sitar-based band – debut performance.)
20RMB // 9pm // LUNE // 4F, 218 Xinle Lu, corner of Donghu Lu (新乐路218号, 东湖路路口)
