Chen Guangbiao’s at it again down in Yingjiang, Yunnan! After pictures of his shamelessly showy relief efforts in Japan earlier this week, it’s hard to believe he could top himself already, but the man has done it! Sure, he’s not pulling anybody from the rubble this time, but he’s doling out stacks of cash like a rock star to earthquake survivors in Yunnan.
Before everybody was lined up neatly along the road for pictures, I can only imagine what kind of mad dash happened when somebody shouted “Hey, Chen’s here handing out money!” Nanfang Daily specifies that “these people (volunteers) didn’t request the money, and they were specifically asked to hold it up for the photo.”
His notes to followers on Sina Weibo sound more like a tax deduction invoice than anything else:
Hi friends, yesterday evening I flew from Japan to Shanghai and then on to Yunnan, and this morning I arrived in Yingjiang. The local government organised three villages and a dozen or so volunteers to help distribute 200RMB donations each to 900 quake victims. I also donated to one family with a teenage kid that requires heart surgery at about 40,000RMB. That comes to 213,000RMB in all.
And today he’s getting his hands dirty (at lease as he poses with shovel in hand) planting thousands of trees!
Tomorrow [Thursday] morning I’m going to donate a thousand trees to the Yunnan Green Foundation, and go tree-planting with the students. I hope more wealthy people can come join me to help the poor.
Those of you poo-pooing the ridiculously audacious manner in which Chen goes about his donations, try to appreciate just how little philanthropy there actually is in China. Can’t hurt to convince the next young crop of billionaires that giving your money away can make you look awesome, right?
Who knows where Chen’s off to next! Only one thing is for sure: when he gets there, he’ll make sure everybody knows it.
