The first Chinese fatality of the great earthquake in Japan has been confirmed by the Chinese embassy in Tokyo. No information on the victim was released at the request of the bereaved family. All we know is that he/she was killed in Ishinomaki city, Miyagi prefecture, when the quake-triggered tsunami hit the area.
Ishinomaki has been badly hit by the tsunami, and it’s also the city where 100 students from Wenzhou were earlier reported missing by the Shanghai Daily. We have seen no updates on the status of this group of students.
Wenzhou has offered 2 million yuan in aid to Ishinomaki, its sister city.
Meanwhile, another 126 trainees working in the badly-hit Miyagi and Iwate prefectures remain missing, the China International Contractors Association confirmed yesterday. The bulk of the trainees are from Beijing, Shandong and Jiangsu.
