With the exciting, exciting news that Bob Dylan is making it to Shanghai, Shanghai Folk Rock United is putting on a show to welcome the musical legend featuring 6 singer/songwriters performing their original songs: Liu Jian, Bai Yu, Jian Bin, Samantha Sprole, Tom Mangione, and Adam Minter.
Say whaaat? Adam Minter of Shanghai Scrap is a folk rock singer? Since when? We asked one of their organizers and we got this interesting tidbit: Minter used to be a singer/songwriter in the US whose songs were played pretty often on college music radio stations. He even toured over the US and had a cd.
Well, that’s something Shanghaiist didn’t know! As for the other performers, Bai Yu is a very popular singer in the local folk rock scene, Jian Bin hails from Yunnan and is a regular with the Folk Rock United group, usually singing dreamy love songs. Liu Jian is also a name that should ring familiar–he’s actually founded Folk Rock United in 2009. Columbian-born Samantha Sprole sings Irish/Creole folk songs as well as her own works–she has an “incredible voice” we’re told. Last but not least, Tom Mangione, also known as Ho-Tom the Conqueror, usually sings a few funny songs.
It’s happening tonight so come out and support Shanghai’s local folk rock talent!
