See that billboard on the right? It reads “Qingming condolences to my lost wife Gao Dezhen, who passed away during labor at the No. 2 Affiliated Hospital of West China Hospital on February 18, 2011.”
The outdoor billboard stands on an expressway in Chengdu and was bought by the man standing in front of it for RMB150,000 ($22,860), to seek justice for his wife who died of a massive haemorrhage after delivering her baby by caesarean section. The man, Deng, believes that his wife died because of hospital negligence.
Although the Legal Department at Chengdu Industrial and Commercial Bureau confirmed that there was no need for the banner to be registered with authorities because the content was not for commercial purpose, it was subsequently taken down after just eight hours.
Qingming Festival (or Tomb Sweeping Day) falls on Tuesday, April 5.
