The next time you go by Wulumuqi Lu or Anfu Lu, please be on the look out for pickpockets, especially if you’re a cyclist. Shanghaiist just witnessed two very close call pickpocketing attempts on this corner. This is what went down: Yours truly was enjoying a meal at Zest Express’s Wulumuqi location preparing to write up another Cafetique review when we saw the manager of Zest’s, Franck Krynen and his friend suddenly run out the door.
My table looked out curiously and when the two came back in they told us they’d rushed out to stop some pickpockets who were running along a female cyclist. There are two young guys who hang out just outside on Wulumuqi Lu who grab phones out of pockets and what’s more, it was the second time they’d seen them attempt to pickpocket someone in 5 minutes.
We were somewhat shocked and about to ask more when the pickpockets went at it again. Franck and his friend quickly rushed out, ourselves following out the door to watch. The friend caught up with the pickpocket, stopping him just in time. When we spoke to Franck about it after, he said the pickpocketing is a recent thing and that those two petty thieves work Wulumuqi Lu (i.e. right under their nose) and around the corner on Anfu Lu, right outside of Baker and Spice.
They target bicyclists who keep valuables in their pockets and look out for people who have headphones on and/or people coming from the two banks located on these streets. So everyone, please keep your guard up if you’re around these two roads or anywhere for that matter.
And last but not least, big hat tip to Franck Krynen and friend. You’re officially our new heroes.
