French priest Jean Gabriel has spent the last six years helping to raise the living standards of lepers in one of China’s famous leper villages. This Sunday, BEAN Shanghai and French volunteer organization A Pleines Mains will be hosting a talk with him at Jiashan Market’s Melange Oasis, facilitated by yours truly.
Jean Gabriel has, with the help of A Pleines Mains’ fundraising efforts, improved the living conditions of hundreds of severely handicapped lepers in Southern China.
Besides constructing a 10-bedroom house for those suffering, he has also helped in improving the village’s sanitation system, and building a pigsty and fish-rearing pond. With APM’s donations, he has helped subsidize education for the children and grandchildren of lepers, as well as padi for major surgery, medication and other medical support. All work was done in connection with the local government, under an agreement not to proselytize.
If you’re interested in hearing inspirational stories about charity work in China, please do come by. Jean Gabriel will be telling the story of why he came to China, and answering any questions you may have.
