Local legislators have elected Jiang Ping (姜平), secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government and director of the government’s general office, as vice mayor in a meeting yesterday morning.
The 54 year old native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, is now officially one of the city’s nine vice mayors. Jiang started his political career as the secretary of Shanghai Politics and Law Committee, and was appointed the Shanghai government’s secretary-general in 2008. He was also formerly the vice governor of the Pudong.
In his post election speech, Jiang said, “I now deeply feel the new role’s heavier responsibilities upon my shoulder, and I’ll sincerely work for the interests of local residents.”
