SUBCINEMA: THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU Sub-culture presents sub-cinema at Dada. This week’s showing is “The Life Aquatic”. Directed by Wes Anderson and starring A-listers like Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Cate Blanchett, the ironic comedy-drama follows oceanographer Steve Zissou and his crew on a jaguar shark hunting expedition. WINE TASTING Vino-lovers from all over the world are gathering together at the Shanghai Huating Hotel for this large wine-tasting event. It’ll be mostly knowledgeable industry people out showcasing their new products–we read it as a great chance to sample a few varietals and learn more about China’s wine-making industry.

DAMOISELLE NIGHT COCKTAILS AND MIXOLOGY Damoiseau’s putting on a new regular night every Wednesday at Tara 57 and we have to say, we’re quite intrigued. It’s a free cocktail-making class from 7-9pm and after that, knock back Damoiseau cocktails for 40RMB each. Ladies, if you plan ahead and book, they’ll also give you one free cocktail. PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF COMEDY ANNIVERSARY EDITION Come celebrate with the PRC at their regular hang out: Malone’s 3/F with a night of ad-libbed hilarity. Using audience suggestions, Shanghai’s local improv troupe creates outrageous and hysterical scenes right before your eyes, in the tradition of Second City, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and Saturday Night Live. 50RMB entrance and all drinks for 30RMB all night.

SOMERSET MAUGHAM LITERARY SALON In 1922, British writer Somerset Maugham set out from Shanghai on a journey along the Yangtze River. The book “On a Chinese Screen” records his impressions of that journey, the country, the people and the foreigners in China in the early 20th century. Jenny Laing-Peach and Mustaq Missouri present a literary Salon on Somerset Maugham with readings from ” On a Chinese Screen.”

FILM NIGHT: THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE This 70’s surrealist film “Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” from Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel follows a group of upper class people attempting to dine together despite continual interruptions. The movie won the 1972 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and a nomination for best script which was written by French screenwriter/actor Jean-Claude Carriere. In French with English subtitles.
