Shanghai loves it’s ladies, that’s for sure. In this town, members of the fairer sex can drink every night for free so easily. The only real problem: there’s too many options when you’re looking to have a fun night out with the girls. So in this series, we hit up all the ‘ladies only’ specials around town to rate them. That way you’ll know which are worth a sip, and which you ought to skip.
What: Wednesdays at The Strip
Where: 6-7/F, Hong Kong Plaza, 282 Huaihai Zhong Lu, near Huangpi Nan Lu (淮海中路282号, 香港广场6-7楼, 近黄陂南路)
Drink: Free flow champagne from 5pm to midnight.
Difficulty of bar access: Physically accessing the bar wasn’t all that difficult, but the bar staff seemed pretty damn indifferent to us. Ordering drinks went like this: Two glasses of champagne? Champagne? Yep…um, champagne? (Staff move around the bar, picking bottles up and glasses, setting them down in different places). Hmm… now are they getting our drinks?…more hmm-ing. You have to wait to see them take out the glasses and start pouring before you know they are going to acquiesce your request. Fair enough – that happens at plenty of bars, but would it hurt to nod or make eye contact? Maybe they too come from that stoic school of bartending – all up-tilted chins and tensed jaw muscles.
Music: Here’s where they began to win us over. They play easy house vibes at a good decibel so you can carry a conversation but the groove can still make you wanna dance.
Atmosphere: It’s not what the name suggests, let’s get that out of the way. We see a lot of young working professionals every time we go to this lounge. Inside it’s a spacious but still intimate area sectioned off by stylish couches. It has an equally large terrace overlooking big flashy brands like Ermenegildo Zegna lining Huaihai Lu.
Female to Male ratio: We’d say about even.
Overall: We’d appreciate a smile from the bartending staff but we’re slightly infatuated with the space itself and feeling the smart, young crowd that goes. Go after work for an excellent dinner (it’s a steakhouse after all or try their truffle macaroni and cheese — though small-portioned, it’s the best we’ve found in town) then stay for drinks. It’s an alluring chill-out location and if they’re giving out free champagne, you’ve got all the more reason to.
