Thanks, you jerks! Anybody who stayed in Shanghai over May holiday probably noticed the disgusting amount of crap in the air. I know my sinuses definitely did. Turns out it’s all the North’s fault: sandstorms blown in from the region not only gave half of us the worst seasonal allergies ever, it also set air pollution records!
In terms of inhalable particulate matter, yesterday’s air quality was the worst in four years – the only district in Shanghai that seems to have been spared a “heavy air pollution” level lable (the highest level of five) was Huangpu District. Today, the levels are staying the same, though they are thought to be able to dip down to level four tomorrow, if the rains come.
Still, those of us who are physically weak or suffer from respiratory problems should wear face masks and spend as little time as possible outdoors.
But it didn’t just set Shanghai records – thanks to all those sandstorms hundreds of miles away, we also became China’s most polluted city! According to People’s Daily, our air pollution index 87 points higher than that of the runner-up on May 2!
Just thinking about it makes my nose itch… oh no, wait, my window’s cracked open.
