Well here’s something you’ll never see at any of the other Idol shows elsewhere. 30 year old Xue Qiaoping (薛巧萍) from Ninghai, Zhejiang, performs the dying art of shuaya (耍牙), literally teeth playing, on a recent episode of China’s Got Talent. She tells hosts Zhou Libo and Yi Nengjing that the art used to be taught to only males within a very exclusive circle but now a handful of women like her have taken up shuaya because there aren’t enough men to keep the art alive. Her commitment to the art has also meant temporarily having to put her love life on hold. Shuaya requires the performer to keep several pairs of pig’s buckteeth, each usually 5 or 6 cm long, in the mouth, and to move them rapidly in and out in varying patterns.
