57 year old performance artist, Cheng Li, from Lanzhou, Gansu province, has been sentenced to a year of “reeducation through labour” for having sex with his wife in public during a show at the Beijing Modern Art Gallery two months ago.
Although only professional artists were invited to the strictly closed-door event, Cheng was detained by police for his “pornographic art”. His wife, a willing participant in the show, was not detained.
Cheng’s lawyer has said he would appeal for an “administrative review” of the sentence. Meanwhile, artists in Beijing are now coming together to try to save him from the labour camp.
Before anyone goes scoffing at Cheng’s kind of performance art, the artist actually has a profound message that he wanted to bring across with his show, which is that “the popular trend of commercializing art is nothing but a trade of sex for commercial benefits.”
Now that’s deep, so deep. Pity the police will never get it.
