Shanghai loves it’s ladies, that’s for sure. In this town, members of the fairer sex can drink every night for free so easily. The only real problem: there’s too many options when you’re looking to have a fun night out with the girls. So in this series, we hit up all the ‘ladies only’ specials around town to rate them. That way you’ll know which are worth a sip, and which you ought to skip.
What: Wednesdays ‘Damoiselle night’ at Tara 57
Where: 2/F, 57 Fuxing Xi Lu, near Yongfu Lu (复兴西路57号2楼， 近永福路)
Drink: Hey, finally! A bar that’s doing something different with their ladies night. From 7-9pm, this well-known cocktail spot will let ladies behind the bar and give them a personal cocktail crafting lesson. Using Damoiseau Rhum, you can shake up an original, pear, mango, raspberry, or strawberry daiquiri under the guidance of their expert bartenders. One free cocktail-making lesson for each lady and cocktails after that are 40RMB.
Difficulty of bar access: N/A. You’re making it, so you’ll actually be inside their circular bar.
Music: They get DJ Hey Boy Hey Girl–Andreas Franco and Launa Fen to mix some house beats.
Atmosphere: Extremely dark lit. The place has no windows and the only light is from the red candles set on the tables. To some people, it might be cozy but we thought it was kind of claustrophobic (as someone from Hong Kong, city of densely packed teensy-weensy bars, this is saying a lot). It was empty when we arrived just after 7pm but the small place had filled up by the time we left two hours later. Just groups of people just looking for a good low-key drink and chat with friends.
Female to Male ratio: 3:1.
Overall: There’s no dance party happening here, but it’s hell of a lot of fun playing bartender and trying your best to imitate the barmen of Tara 57’s impressive (construction drill-like) shaking skills.
