What is up with Groupon? After a very embarrassing Superbowl ad which surely must’ve displeased the government for its pro-Tibetan indepedence slant, they’re
pissing off the general public too. On May 10th, Groupon (Gaopeng.com in China) and Tencent announced a lottery giveaway for a couple of white iPhone 4s. All you had to do was start following Groupon’s microblog and retweet the announcement. But there was something a little fishy with the winners and a cheating scandal quickly unraveled. After the human flesh search engine did its thing, it was discovered that the “four” winners not only were the same two people…they were Groupon employees too.
In a statement Groupon said, “We have found that some individual employees had taken advantage of the lottery… Gaopeng has already fired a vice president in charge of the lottery… and we will offer another 20 iPhone 4s in the lottery to compensate our followers.” Moral of the story: Nothing gets between the Chinese and their Apple products, definitely not glass windows. You promise Apple products to the people, you give them Apple products.
