Update: Souper Fresh Gubei has closed temporarily due to a few operational problems. They’re unsure of when they will reopen however, you can still visit their Minhang location.
The western districts of Minhang and Gubei are the stronghold of expat families, delicious Korean barbecues, Japanese food…and well, not much else. On the random occasion French concession devotees and Pudong-ites come out in this direction they usually just get stuck at the Hongmei Entertainment Street. There’s a few good deals there but if that’s your only hangout on the west side, you’re missing out on the hands down best salad and soup bar in the city.
No more than a ten minute walk from the well known Hongmei Entertainment Street is Souper Fresh. Open for approximately six months now, this place has steadily built up a reputation for their fantastic soup and salad buffet which runs from 11am-9pm daily. At a reasonable price of 58RMB, customers get a “soup-er” selection of greens, vegetables, and salad toppings: plenty of different dressings, nuts, tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, croutons, coleslaw, egg salad, and even hummus.
Also included with the buffet are tasty soups (carrot orange, chicken noodle, mushroom, Chinese-style borscht, Thai pumpkin prawn), a few hot dishes like pizza, pasta and rice dishes, and a fruit salad. If you’ve ever eaten at Soup Plantation in the US, it’s more or less the same thing. It’s the perfect kind of food fix when all you’re looking for is a simple soup or salad and not a heavy complicated affair.
Drinks don’t come with the buffet but order any beverage on the menu for half off. The same goes for dessert. Any dessert item is 50% off if tacked onto the salad and soup buffet or if you get it to take away. Soup-er Fresh must also really understand how our stomachs work because if dessert is the only thing you want and you want a lot of it, you can get all you can eat desserts for 38RMB from 2-6pm. They have cookies, banana bread, cheesecake, brownies, carrot cake, lemon meringue, coconut cream and apple pies, muffins, more than enough to binge out on.
You can of course get any of this stuff a la carte. We won’t list all the prices here, but you’d be surprised at how affordable they are. Coffees are only 15-18RMB. Three different breakfast sets are only 28RMB: pancakes, omelet, or an scrambled eggs plate. (Browse their full menu online). Quite frankly, quality of this sort doesn’t often come for such low prices in Shanghai.
They’ve been doing so well, in fact, they just soft-opened a second location near the Gubei Carrefour–still a bit out westwards, but it comes in a little more towards downtown if you’re coming from that direction. They’re still rolling out their desserts and breakfasts and won’t be fully operational for another two weeks or so but as they’re settling into their new location, they’re doing an introductory half-off offer on their buffet–meaning it’s only 29RMB for their amazing soup and salad buffet spread until this Sunday the 22nd. That’s more than enough reason to head out to suburban Shanghai.
