Look! Slinking past the confused security guard in the government housing estate. It’s an institution escapee, it’s a trick-or-treater. It’s Bauhinia Lady! Inspired by last year’s spring blockbuster Kick-Ass, a thirty-something Hong Kong woman has taken social justice into her own hands by dressing up as a masked crusader and giving money out to the poor.
Oh, and instant noodles too. Named after Hong Kong’s official flower, Bauhinia Lady recently gave out 2000HKD and bowls of ramen to members of a housing estate in Hong Kong’s Jordan district while in full costume. According to what little information exists about her, Bauhinia Lady felt moved to act in response to the local government’s poor treatment of lower-income Hong Kong citizens, using her 6000HKD tax rebate for the cause. Though her real identity is still unknown, we can confirm that she’s studied abroad in the West, and pulls in a 40,000HKD monthly salary.
She asks that other people join in her fight, and also donate their tax rebates to fight inequality. Bauhinia Lady will not be accepting personal donations, and also states, somewhat incredulously, that she doesn’t want any attention.
We can’t wait for copycats to start turning up in the mainland. Perhaps a Chai (拆) Avenger, who gives unscrupulous developers their just desserts, using his laser heat vision and golden hammer to destroy their luxury homes.
