Talk about overkill. After contacting an online agent, on April 28, a 17-year-old high school freshman from Huaishan, Anhui had his kidney removed for 22,000RMB. The student, surnamed Zheng, claimed he wanted to buy an iPad 2, but could not afford it. He thus decided the best course of action was to sling his innards on the black market.
After the surgery was completed, Zheng used the money to buy an iPhone and a laptop before returning home. His mother of course became suspicious of his new electronics and demanded to know where he got them. He confessed, and she immediately contacted the police and confronted the hospital where the procedure took place.
Turns out the surgeons were less than legitimate (surprise!) and the hospital performing the surgery was not licensed for such practices. The hospital’s defense? They lease their urology department out to businessmen from Fujian and were unaware of what took place. Nurses working at the hospital claim the closest thing they have to surgical equipment is what they use for circumcision!
What is it with kids these days? iPad 2 only costs like 4000RMB in China. So this kid is both greedy AND stupid. And worst of all, it sounds like he didn’t even get the coveted device.
