Have you heard of “planking,” that internet meme-inspired phenomenon where people lie face down in strange places, body completely straight and with their hands at their sides? I know, what?! It wasn’t long before planking hit East Asia, first with an ultra-popular planking pair called 扑街少女 (“Pujie girls”) in Taiwan and now with China’s own 扑街哥 (“Planking Brother”) in Chengdu.
There’s not much to say about the mysterious 23-year-old “BBZ,” except that he is quite a prolific planker and has become an overnight internet sensation. Does this mean we’ll soon see more Chinese plankers? More pictures, including of a fan who did his own planking, here.
Of course, it’s possible that this meme will be short-lived here, especially since It seems that some have already started using it as a protest method at Foxconn. Though that makes us wonder what’s next in the field of meme-inspired protests – Nyancat remixes for Aiweiwei?
