I guess after all the queuing that happened last year for Expo tickets, Expo, post-Expo China Pavilion tickets, and Expo commemorative coins, it really should come as no surprise that Shanghaiers were ready once again to gather in droves to get something! This time it was for coins commemorating the CPC 90th anniversary and the 2011 New Year.
Hundreds got in line as early as 6am on Thursday morning to get one of the 60 million 5RMB coins printed for the party anniversary, or one of the 30 million 1RMB coins printed for the year of the rabbit.
The 5RMB coin looks way cooler, with the CPC sickle, stars, a dove, and peony. They are 5mm larger than the 1RMB coin, are made of brass alloy, and are the only 5RMB coins now in circulation. And after staring at them for about five minutes now, I totally want one.
And for those of you who think coin collecting is for dweebs, think again. The coin set issued back in 1988 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the People’s Bank, of all things, is now worth 3,400RMB! The second most valuable is for the 30th anniversary of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, coming in at 1,100RMB. Huh, seems like it might actually be kinda hard to guess which coins will soar in value. BETTER BUY THEM ALL.
Here’s a video of all the excited masses:
