Everyone going from Beijing to Shanghai or the other way around in the new high speed trains is in for a treat. There will be 403 pretty attendants, or high-speed sisters (高姐), as called by netizens, attending to passengers needs (don’t get too excited though, they are not going to attend to EVERY need). They are all an average of 22 years old and have an average height of 165 centimeters. They are also edumacated – each girl has at least graduated from junior college and can speak standard Mandarin Chinese as well as fluent English.
In order to provide flight-attendant-style service, the ladies had to go through a rough three month training course. In the course they’ve been taught things like how to provide “5S” service to passengers: smile, speed, standards, sincerity and satisfy.
You might wonder why there would be training needed for smiling, but it is not as easy as it sounds. As a high speed train attendant you are only allowed to show eight teeth (some claim it is even less, meaning six teeth) when smiling. To achieve this, they were training by placing a chopstick between their jaws. Judging from the photos, some of the ladies already have cramps in their faces (tense much?).
But that’s not all. To make things even more complicated, there is also a correct way and wrong way to bow:
“We have three types of bowing. We bow 15 degrees down to meet passengers. When standing by the cabin door, we bow 30 degrees down to passengers approaching to the cabin and greet them with ‘welcome on board’. For apologies, we bow 45 degrees down,” said Li Li, vice-captain of the cabin crew team of Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway Line
