The dust has yet to settle over the furore ignited by award-winning actress Lü Liping (吕丽萍) when she enthusiastically shared several homophobic posts on Sina Weibo by a Chinese pastor in Rochester, NY, decrying the legalisation of same-sex marriage by the New York State Senate.
While angry netizens continue to send hate mail to Lü and the pastor, notable sexologist-sociologist Li Yinhe (李银河) has weighed in on the matter. On her own Weibo account, she posted a note saying:
I’ve just received a message from my friend Ah Qiang about Lü Liping’s homophobic comments, so I went to take a look at what’s been said — basically it’s that homosexuality is sin and that homosexuals are sinners. Seriously, all old talk, all plain ignorance and backwardness. If this was just an average Zhou talking, nobody would care. Some people are more liberal, some people are more conservative — that’s all very natural. But for a public figure to make such a reactionary statement — that’s not forgiveable.
