If you remember PinkHome, the erstwhile institution in gay clubland, chances are you’ve been in Shanghai for a long long time. The masterminds behind the club are back after a long break, and they’re back with a vengeance. Their latest venture comes in the form of Club Angel, located underground on the corner of Wulumuqi and Hengshan Roads.
The new club is easily the biggest in Shanghai’s homo history. Aside from a massive dance floor, it boasts of a number of chillout areas — Teddy’s Bar (for plus-sized boys and their admirers); Castro Lounge (supposedly for expatriates and their admirers) and Cage (a dark room that isn’t really all that dark).
All purchases within the club are made with the help of a contactless card (similar to the one you’re using for public transport) which you can top up any time at the counter. Also interesting is the Minimart, where you can pick up bottles of alcohol if you’re planning to get yourself smashed with your party posse and can’t be bothered to queue up at the bar.
The club has been a hit since its soft opening two weekends ago. A visit by Shanghaiist last Saturday found the queue to the club spilling out into the streets despite the rain. A dance act was flown in from Taipei, and DJ ZzyzX.Wilson from Hong Kong was behind the deck, keeping the crowd on its feet till 5 in the morning.
What Club Angel has going for it is its proximity to the other establishments in the gaybourhood as well as its down-to-earth prices. A gin & tonic (the only thing we drank the entire evening) will set you back a mere 28RMB — that’s significantly lower than the 40-50RMB charged at some of the other bars.
All in all, a welcome addition that we expect to inject new life into the somewhat staid scene. One hopes they won’t wreck it by beginning to charge exorbitant cover charges.
