Remember all that speculation over the WOW fitness lady teaching us how to keep it loose in a Shanghai taxi? Well the mystery is finally solved! Both City Weekend and China Daily ran interviews with her this week, only a few days before her stint as wacky aerobics guru comes to an end. And as it turns out, aside from the occasional push ups session at the airport, she’s surprisingly normal.
Her name is Nancy Pon, she’s 39, from Canada, and as weibo users suspected earlier this month, she’s a GM inside of Touchmedia. The aerobic clown get-up was an effort to disguise herself (a job well done) and one of her conditions when she signed on to film the ads, which work to promote fitness awareness among Shanghai residents.
As she tells City weekend, the response to the video was surprising, but (as she repeatedly proclaims, as if convincing herself) all worth it in the name of health awareness. And when asked about which reactions were the most unexpected, she had this to say:
Being called a transvestite! (laughs). An article in the Shanghai Daily called me, “distinctive looking.” They said, that “poor girl who is so desperately trying to become famous.” The only reason I agreed to was if I looked different – as anonymous as possible!
She sounds totally normal, until you hear this from China Daily:
Pon tries to exercise everywhere she goes. Even at airports, where people usually spend a lot of time waiting to board, Pon will find some quiet place to do push-ups while people stare at her with strange looks.
“I don’t mind. People have to carry on exercising. When you are young, your circulation is good and probably you can abuse your body, like going to bed late, skipping meals. But what if you get old?” she said.
Eh, so she’s a bit of a fitness nut. Hopefully the nickname “tranny fitness lady” doesn’t stick (she’s also previously been labeled The Garbage Lady.) Fingers crossed that her next socially-conscious endeavor shines a more flattering light.
Keep an eye out tomorrow when you grab a taxi on your way to our party, a new character is set to take over the WOW fitness routine July 1st!
