Another big event, another strange mascot to delight the children and adults (and by delight I mean confuse and terrify). Meet Jing Jing, the mascot of the 2011 World Aquatics Competiton that’s taking place in Shanghai from July 16-31. He’s a pair of swimming goggles with a mouth and no body – his limbs come off of his eyes (there are drawings of him for every event at the championship if you’re curious).
Jing Jing joins previously bizarre mascots created for big Chinese events – though to be fair, the mascot for the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, Izzy, is in good company with these guys – like Peng Peng, the Kookaburra that hung around the Australian pavilion at the Expo.
The Expo itself had Haibo, the lovechild of Gumby and Towlie that multiplied and attacked the city. He even got his own show. They even attacked Hillary Clinton and pregnant women, those bastards!
And the Beijing Olympics had the Friendlies that had at least some resemblance to things on this planet. There were originally five, but that grew slowly. They were supposedly cursed with bad omens and its creator even disowned them.
