If your dream is to become a game designer and you’re looking for your lucky break, this is it! Shanghai Game Jam is a free event that invites 50 participants (of any skill level) to sign up, team up, and compete against each other to create their own original game by the end of the two day event—folding beds and meals provided.
The teams will design a game based only on materials they bring to Game Jam and, of course, imagination. The top prizes are awarded to those who team up with strangers at the event instead of bringing friends along.
The prizes for outstanding games are a Tutorials & Summits Pass worth 1500RMB to the Game Developers Conference China 2011, provided by the Independent Games Festival China.
This looks like a fun event to attend just to see what people will create. But if you think you have the skills to compete, you might just land a job. Organizer Coconut Island Studio, an indie video game studio based in Shanghai and Germany, is probably using Game Jam as a way to scrounge up local talent. Just don’t wait too long to sign up.
The Shanghai Game Jam is based off of Global Game Jam, an international organization that encourages willing participants to work together during intense, power-hour-esque two-day marathons in order to experiment with new game concepts and eventually develop stimulating, creative games.
