Backdrop to the festivities
That’s right folks, Shanghai (or should we say Shanghai’s suburbs) plays host to another large scale music festival!
The fake blue water and Hainan imported sand of Jinshan Beach will be the backdrop to this year’s Zebra Festival from August 5th to 7th. That’s right, Shanghai is having its own sun screen fueled beach party!
Zebra is one of the major festivals in China, and their version in Chengdu attracts some of the biggest festival crowds in the country. In recent incarnations, festival organizers have shifted to a more pop music-friendly booking aesthetic, seeking to tap into the ravenous mainstream market for pop and soft rock, rather than take chances on newer forms of music with less established draws. Their Shanghai version of the festival sees this continued with confirmations of Edison Chen, some Taiwan stars, the requisite “who?” Scando acts, a Japanese pop rock act, along with a cavalcade of Shanghai-based pop rock acts.
This year’s (confirmed) lineup:
Edison Chen (Hong Kong…he’s baaack!)
Zhang Zhenyue & MC Hot Dog (Taiwan)
Wang Ruolin (Taiwan)
Van Fan (Taiwan)
Josie Ho (Hong Kong)
Yida Huang ( Singapore)
Convenience Store (Beijing)
Nova Heart (Helen Feng + Rodion from Italy)
Mix Market (Japan)
MOYO Studio (Chengdu)
Pink Berry (Shanghai)
Crystal Butterfly (Shanghai)
Plastic Chocolate (Shanghai)
Candy Shop (Shanghai)
Top Floor Circus (Shanghai)
Okay, a lineup filled with mainstream pop and soft rock music may not be a lineup worth paying top dollar for, but since Jinshan is only around 50 minutes from downtown, can you really say no to spending three sunny days hanging out on a beach? C’mon, Edison Chen really needs the emotional support….
Still no? Okay, then how about this….
MIDI festival is back, but this time they’re also headed to the beach! Albeit much farther away. From Aug 4th-Aug 7th, Ocean Midi festival will take place on the famous beach of Rizhao City, Shandong Province. With more than 44 of China’s best up and coming as well as established acts such as Cuijian (China’s rock n’ roll pioneer), this is a festival you REALLY cannot miss. In fact, skip Zebra festival entirely and spend your weekend partying in Shandong.

How to get there:
Address: No. 5 Xincheng Road, Jinshan District (金山区新城路5号)
Take metro line 1 to JinJiang Park; when you arrive take the buses labeled “石梅线 (ShiMeiXian)” These will shuttle you to and from the beach. The bus ride is 1 hour long and only costs 10 RMB. Once you are dropped off, it is a 20 minute walk to the beach, or there are plenty of willing rickshaw drivers to whisk you towards the sea.
