Human Fish sighting alert! 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist and confirmed party bro Michael Phelps arrived at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport yesterday. Phelps flew in from Australia, where he was training at the Gold Coast Aquatic Center in Queensland, in preparation for the royal ass-kicking he planned on doling out at the 14th FINA World Aquatics Championships now under way in Shanghai.
Phelps posted a celebratory meta-tweet from his Blackberry at approximately 8:30pm Beijing standard time yesterday, declaring “Weeeee twitter DOES work!!!”, allaying his fears that he’d be unable to relay his hourly musings to the world whilst in China.
Great things are obviously expected from Phelps in Shanghai, as his octuple Gold Medal winning performance at the Beijing Olympics 3 years ago made quite the lasting impression. Having recently declared next year’s London Olympics his last, the chance to see Phelps do his swim-faster-than-others schtick in Shanghai should not be missed. The Human Fish’s prime won’t last forever!
One day, you’ll get to tell your grandchildren about Phelps’ once-in-a-generation speed, and diamond-hard abs to boot. Here’s a list of the 7 events Phelps will be competing in:
Haha, just kidding. Here are those events (and ticket purchasing locations) in English.
All listed dates are for month of July, and all competition times for all heats begin at 9am (ending at 11:30am on most days), all competition times for semifinals and finals begin at 6pm (ending at a variety of times, ranging from 8pm-8:30pm).
All individual event heats and semifinals occur on the same day, with finals occurring the following day. All relay events have their heats and finals on the same day, with no semifinal dithering to speak of.
So, if you wanted to catch Phelps in his 200m freestyle swims, you’d go for the 9am heats on the morning of the 25th, go for a lunch/siesta before catching his semifinals race on the same day at 6pm, and then show up the following day at 6pm to catch the finals where he crushes everybody. However, relay events (like the 4x200m freestyle) have their heats in the morning and finals in the evening, all on the same day. Copy?
