US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Beijing and met with his counterpart (and probable future Chinese head honcho) Vice President Xi Jinping this morning in the Great Hall of the People at Tiananmen Square, to begin a four-day tour that includes a series of meetings in Beijing and Chengdu. Topics that Biden will discuss during the trip will reportedly include the current global economy, currency concerns and trade.
It’s Biden’s second time in China, as he came in 1979 as a senator from Delaware to visit the Great Wall. After the morning’s meetings, Biden went with his granddaughter Naomi to get brunch at a restaurant near the Drum Tower. The new ambassador Gary Locke accompanied Biden to brunch, and the party was promptly swarmed by giddy laobaixing hoping to get a photo with the number 2 leader of the American Empire. Here’s hoping Biden does some literal panda-hugging on his trip down in Sichuan, like everybody else seems to be doing these days.
