Around 11pm on Wednesday, a local doctor in a Wenzhou, Zhejiang hospital was attacked by two men, one Italian and one Chinese, after the men became irate that no preferential treatment was offered to the injured father of the Italian expat. Objects were hurled at the doctor, who was reportedly rendered deaf in one ear after an eardrum was perforated from being slapped in the face.
The official report states that the doctor, surnamed Lin, received a party of four at the Wenzhou No. 2 Hospital that included the Italian and his injured father, along with a Chinese man and a Japanese woman who spoke Chinese. The doctor attended to the patient, who had an eye injury, one minute after the party arrived, with an on-duty nurse reporting that the patient came in reeking of alcohol and walked unsteadily.
Things began to turn violent after the doctor walked away after the brief checkup, turning to a computer to issue documents for tests:
At that point the woman complained in Chinese, “Why did foreigner receive such slow treatment in China?”
Lin replied that Chinese and foreign patients were treated the same, and the patient’s son and the Chinese man responded by shouting and pounding on the doctor’s desk, according to the witness.
Camera footage shows the two men smashed items on the desk and pulled a fish tank and the computer screen to the floor. They even pushed and tried to beat a family member of another patient who tried to stop them.
Lin fled to a hallway to escape the assailants, only to return later to finish filling out the test documents he was attending to earlier. The Italian then threw a steel folder at Lin, and the Chinese man chipped in with a hurled plastic flower pot.
As security and police were arriving on the scene, the Italian continued to avenge his father’s slighted honor, cornering the doctor and reportedly slapping his face hard enough to perforate an eardrum. Lin reported an immediate loss of hearing in one ear after being assaulted.
The security camera footage below shows Lin standing at the computer, ostensibly after returning from the hallway where he fled to for cover. The doctor speaks to the unruly party, only to get a folder thrown at him in response.
If it turns out that the violent Italian, who’s father was reportedly inebriated, was himself also drunk, then we might have another solid addition for the Drunken Laowai Hall of Fame.
