Former US Ambassador to China, current presidential candidate, and unwitting Jasmine Revolution supporter Jon Huntsman was interviewed on ABC last night on a variety of policy points and opinions such as just how crazy he thinks factions of the GOP really are. In a nod to his former post, one of the last questions asked by the interviewer regarded whether Huntsman thought the Chinese government was behind the impressive and sophisticated cyber attacks that targeted multinational corporations like Google, various world governments, the UN and even the White House.
Transcript from 19:22:
Q: How much do you think the government of China is behind any of these cyber attacks on the US that are thought to have originated in China?
Huntsman: Well there are individual universities behind some of the cyber attacks and there are individual units within the People’s Liberation Army who are no doubt behind certain attacks. Because of that you have to say that the Chinese government is part of the overall planning, the development of technology and maybe even a targeting list which gives me deep concerns about where this goes and the pervasiveness and the reach that China has in terms of the whole cyber warfare side.
What do you think? Is Huntsman suffering from Foreigner spends time in China therefore knows everything Syndrome or does he actually have hard evidence to back what he’s talking about?
And we’re pretty disappointed to see someone with legit China experience going straight for the yellow scare card. We kind of hoped, however overly-optimistically, that he’d take a more nuanced approach.
