A safety official with a power company in Wuhu, Anhui has been sacked for harrassing a journalist who was investigating allegations by several workers that the company had been illegally deducting their wages.
On arriving at the subsidiary office of the Wuhu Guoneng Electric Power Engineering Co. Ltd that was accused of making the wage cuts, the reporter from Anhui Television Station originally asked to speak with the company director Sun Qingyun. He and his crew were thrown out of the office, and despite their persistent requests, Sun and other company officials kept themselves holed up in the office.
Just as the reporter was about to leave with his crew, out came a man who identified himself as the company’s safety official, Liu Laifa, and he invited the journalist into the office to “take an important call”. The journalist said he had no interest in answering anybody’s calls — who knows if they weren’t going to set the mafia on him to beat the living crap out of him next?
That’s when Liu began getting physical with the journalist, pulling him out of the van and getting highly agitated. He demanded to know, “Are you a party member?” The journalist replied, “What does this have to do with whether I’m a party member or not?”
Seeing that he had no chance of getting the journalist to “answer the call”, Liu lost it. “I tell you,” he shrieked. “If you’re opposing me, you’re opposing the party!”
Pointing to himself, he added, “Is this the attitude you’re showing towards the Communist Party?”
All this while, of course, the camera was rolling, and the report aired that very evening.
The company’s party branch secretary back at the headquarters has since promised a thorough investigation of the case and a full refund to workers of all illegally deducted wages. Both Liu, the safety official, and Sun, the company director have been dismissed.
