Ministry of Tofu has translated an article by Canyu.org, a human rights advocacy site, about a 77-year-old woman who knelt naked outside her district courthouse earlier this month to protest the demolition of her Pudong clinic in 2008. From MiniTofu:
On August 18, Zhuang Jinghui, a 77-year-old woman went naked on her knees in order to call Shanghai’s justice system to account for their ineptitude. She wore nothing but a sign in black and white that says, “I want my case to be investigated. Champion the laws. Return the right to sue to me.” Despite repeated clamors for justice from her and her fellow petitioners standing outside the courthouse, no one stood out to answer her needs on the court’s behalf.
This is actually her second nude protest. She first resorted to such extreme measures after being deceived and denied compensation after the demolition in 2008. She was then protesting in order to simply be given a replacement unit for her clinic.
She returned again earlier this month to protest the fact that not only does the unit have no water or electricity, but she is not even the legal owner of the property.
After being taken into custody, she was reportedly urged by officers to settle outside of court. How they possibly imagine she could manage this, we really have no idea. The only result she seems to have achieved is that authorities are now monitoring all her movements.
In a video taken of the protest, Zhuang is eventually covered with a blanket and carried away by officers. Throughout the entire ordeal, she is cheered on by other petitioners who, according to MiniTofu, are repeatedly chanting the Shanghainese for “injustice!” They also scream “我要立案” (wǒ yào lì’àn, “I want to file a report!!”), which translate a little less effectively into English, but you get the idea.
One thing is for sure: Nobody envies the officer whose job it is to confront and a group of riled up petitioning Shanghainese women.
