Nope, not Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida, but the other brother — Neil Bush. Name not ringing a bell? He was the one who claimed back in 2003 that random women came to his hotel room in Hong Kong in the middle of the night and were NOT prostitutes and he did NOT pay them.
Describing himself as a non-political member of a political family, Neil Bush is weibbing almost entirely in Chinese (with the help of an assistant) and has already amassed over 40,000 followers on Sina Weibo.
What does a former president’s brother have to say to Chinese people? Here are some excerpts (translation provided by Shanghaiist):
- I hope Weibo will help you all to understand my family, and promote understanding between our two countries.
- Liu Xiang is my hero. He was clearly in the lead when deliberately obstructed by his opponent. It’s really a shame! Liu Xiang is a great example for the world. He lost the race, but won millions of fans — including me. Liu Xiang Jia You!
- As a father, this is an exciting week for me. My daughter Lauren will be married on Sunday!
- My interest in China began in 1975 during my first trip. In the past 35 years, I have been to China 80 times and am still in awe of China’s rapid development. I hope all Americans can see that China’s development has experienced a long journey, and therefore, have a better understanding of how China grows into a global force.
As for who he’s “following,” currently Neil only seems to care about tennis player Li Na, tech exec Kai-Fu Lee, and the American Embassy in Beijing.
The intrigue! The allure! The drama! Who will Neil follow? What will he write? The suspense is almost enough to mildly annoy us!
