Police in the Jiangsu city of Yangzhou have confirmed that a man turned himself in and confessed to the crime of murdering seven family members of his former partner in crime on Sunday. The man, identified only as Zheng, is reportedly a 32-year-old former convicted felon who served jail-time in 2009 for theft.
Upon his release from jail, Zheng discovered his wife was having an affair with his former partner, surnamed Wang. Zheng spoke with Wang on the situation involving his wife, and police say he was unhappy with the outcome of the discussion.
And this past Sunday, Zheng apparently snapped. Though Zheng initially only planned on attacking his former partner, what occurred instead was a murderous rampage that took seven lives, including the life of a seven-year-old girl, and a woman pregnant with twins.
China Daily reports after Zheng’s arrival in Xuyi County (盱眙县), an area 180km northwest of Yangzhou, he was unable to find Wang at his home, who he planned to stab in the legs. Undeterred, Zheng took his revenge on Wang’s immediate and extended family:
As he was not home, police say he instead used a 20-centimeter knife to slay Wang’s parents and 7-year-old daughter, who had been visiting for the weekend.
Hearing screams, the family next door rushed to see what was happening. Zheng is alleged to have then turned the knife on them, killing 46-year-old Li Xiaozhong, his wife, his mother-in-law and his stepdaughter, who was pregnant with twins.
Li was Wang’s uncle, according to Yangzhou police.
Zheng then drove back to Yangzhou, and eventually turned himself in to police at 9pm. Meanwhile, Zheng was unable to find his wife when searching for Wang, and likely escaped with her life intact.
Apparently there is such a thing as loyalty amongst thieves, and it is not to be questioned. The whole situation sounds to us like something out of Greek tragedy, with marital infidelity, fraternal betrayal and a blood-ridden revenge all coming into play. It now ends up being a situation where Zheng likely dies at the hands of the state, and Wang has to now carry the anger, guilt and burden of a life wrecked by extreme tragedy.
