After hearing loud cries coming from inside a building, a visitor at the Shanghai Wildlife Park decided to check out what was happening and record what they saw. Inside, one trainer is seen using a metal pipe (it’s not entirely clear whether they are using the pipes to beat the cubs or whether they are simply a part of the performance?) as he tugs and kicks a young black bear. The cub is obviously distressed, and the trainer is obviously accustomed to using force.
We’ve had an itching suspicion that this kind of abuse was going on ever since the park claimed they don’t fall under the new animal rights laws about animal performances in zoos. Shanghai Wildlife Park claims they are a park, not a zoo (paywalled) and so can completely ignore the laws.
Shanghaiist is planning to take a trip to the park and check this out for ourselves (who knew Shanghai Zoo’s horrors were the lesser of our local animal park evils?) If any of you have had similar experiences (or have photos or videos to share) please feel free to send them in! The more publicity this thing gets, the more Shanghai authorities are likely to actually care.
