Looks like the subway mobile shopping space is really heating up. First we had the subway supermarket shopping app Yihaodian that seeks to replicate the success that Tesco had in South Korea. Now we have Ubox, a mobile app for iPhones, Android and Java-based phones, that allows you to pay for your vending machine purchases with your cell phone.
All you’ll need to do is to download the app, top up your account with either Alipay or a UnionPay card, and you’re ready to go. Then you’ll have to find a vending machine that actually supports Ubox, insert the ID number of the machine on your app, press the start button, and make your purchase.
Ubox promises a 10% lifetime discount on all purchases (hopefully this doesn’t mean their prices are marked up higher to begin with) and if you sign up now, they’ll give you 5RMB free to get you going.
Sounds like an awesome idea in theory, but for this to actually work, they’ll need to have their vending machines literally every-f*cking-where. So far, we can’t find any directory of vending machines on their website yet.
Watch a demo of Ubox after the jump…
