Li Yang and Kim Lee in happier times.
Li Yang, founder of Crazy English, has finally admitted to hitting his wife, and made a public apology to her Saturday afternoon via his Sina Weibo account which has over 600,000 followers.
“I wholeheartedly apologize to my wife Kim and my girls for committing domestic violence. This has caused them serious physical and mental damage,” he said in a post which has garnered close to 20,000 retweets.
He also added that in accordance with his wife Kim Lee’s request, they are now undergoing professional counselling.
Kim, for her part, appears to be glad that she finally got through to Li Yang. Her primary goal in going public, she had said earlier, was to get her husband the help he needed, but he first needed to admit he had a problem.
Shortly after Li Yang’s public apology, Kim posted the following update on her Weibo account: “LY faced police charges, admitted the truth, accepted responsibility and asked forgiveness. With courage, love and faith in God, we will sort out the rest. My family needs to heal. Everlasting thanks for all support, understanding and love.”
One hopes that Li Yang doesn’t get to pretend like nothing happened with his apology, and that he will still have to face the full weight of the law. But oh wait, there is currently no law in China yet against domestic violence. Legislators are reportedly in the final stages of hammering one together, but no timeline has been firmed up yet.
