There’s quite a lot happening in music this week if you’re looking to keep your ears busy. The Pretty Reckless are in town, local rock shows are all over the place, and Maybe Mars is throwing a concert at YYT on Saturday. That’s all well and good but oh em gee WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR BLACK RABBIT! The festival kicks off at noon on Sunday and we’ve got all the instructions and info you’ll need to get yourself there and navigate the stages. So read on for details, or check out our calendar for even more.

The Pretty Reckless @ MAO Hey
Gossip Girl rock fans! Taylor Momsen is bringing her petitely blonde brand of edginess to Shanghai this week on The Pretty Reckless China Tour. They play rock music that, according to wikipedia, is influenced by Oasis, the Beatles, and just a smidge of Nirvana.
300RMB doors, 220RMB presale // 9pm // MAO Livehouse // 3/F, 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu (重庆南路308号 近建国中号)
Glow Curve @ YYT Glow Curve is a post rock band coming out of Beijing that was formed from the remnants of rock band Maze. Check them out here. They’re in Shanghai promoting their new album. Support by Duck Fight Goose!

Free local music! @ MAO Hey cool, MAO is putting on a free showcase of some of the local bands kicking around Shanghai. Candy Shop (rock/punk/funk/whatever – they promise a concert full of “sugar coated bullets” for your ears), Androsace (rock), Delusion (post rock), and Guo Yifan (folk) all to play.
FREE // 8:30pm // MAO Livehouse // 3/F, 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu (重庆南路308号 近建国中号)
Girls Like Mystery @ Yuyintang If MAO’s free concert wasn’t enough, there’s even more local rock happening over at Yuyintang. Girls Like Mystery kick off the autumn season alongside a sampling of up-and-coming Shanghai rock bands: Next Year’s Love, Beatrice, and Blue Magpie.
40RMB // 8:30pm // Yuyintang // 851 Kaixuan Lu, by Yan’an Xi Lu (凯旋路851号, 近延安西路)
Zooming Night (Maybe Mars show) @ YYT Beijing-based label Maybe Mars is bringing some acts down from the northern capital to play in Shanghai. Luxinpei, Fat City, and Chui Wan to play, with local support by Pairs and Asthma Writers Union. Five bands for 50RMB? We’ll take it. Per usual, it will probably go late late late.

BLACK RABBIT MUSIC FESTIVAL! @ Shanghai Rugby Club Wow, I don’t even know where to start. For those of you living in a cave, Ludacris and 30 Seconds to Mars are headlining an insane festival over in northern Pudong this Sunday. One day, 4 stages, 10 hours. Get your tickets at Smart Shanghai or piao.com. Smart Shanghai has set their deadline for ticket sales on Friday, but you can also grab pre-sale tickets over at Shelter
Saturday night TONIGHT during their Black Rabbit warm up party.
Besides big names like Luda, 30 Seconds to Mars, Grandmaster Flash and HEBE, there are tons of bands we’re excited to see. Unfortunately we’ve heard that Titus Andronicus and Saigon both wont make it because of dumb problems with immigration or something (blast!) but there is plenty more to see. Chinese rock heavy weights Carsick Cars and PK14 will be playing (on different stages), as well as two of our favorite local bands! Rainbow Danger Club will kick things off at 12:30pm and we staunchly recommend, nay, demand you arrive punctually and support the home team. Boys Climbing Ropes will play a few hours after them, graciously filling in for one of the cancelled bands. Speaking of BCR, Morgan over at Smart Shanghai has a nice preview of the festival up, with some good samples and heady vernacular as always.
You can check out the full stage schedules here.
Getting there will probably take you around an hour, all told. The venue is the Shanghai Football/Rugby Club, located at 2700 Zhangyang Bei Lu just north of Wuzhou Avenue. That’s only about 30 meters from the Zhou Hai Lu Station on Line 6 (the pink line.) Taxis shouldn’t run you more than 100rmb, so we recommend you get a carpool going because otherwise you’ll be spending at least 45 minutes underground if you’re coming from Puxi (Explore Shanghai estimates 48 min from People’s Square to Zhou Hai Lu Station.) There’s a handy map and directions for all transportation preferences on the football club’s website, or read Black Rabbit fest’s directions here.
Whew! Alright you guys, that should be enough to get you ready and get you there! Tickets probably wont sell out at the venue (can’t imagine how they possibly could) but presale saves you 90 kuai so it’s worth ordering. See you on Sunday!
350RMB doors, 260RMB presale // Noon to 10pm // Shanghai Rugby Club // 2700 Zhangyang Bei Lu, near Wuzhou Da Dao (上海瑞可碧橄榄球俱乐部 张扬北路2700号, 近五洲大道)
