Weibo seems to be all about sharing and transmitting, but condom company Durex recently found out the hard way that not all Weibo users are as ready or willing to have their work reposted on the internet without citation! The drama started yesterday morning when Durex China weibbed the following short story onto their Weibo account at 8:22am.
Whoever eats lunch with you the most is your colleague; whoever you eat dinner with most is your business partner; only whoever eats breakfast with you most is your lover. However, the pace of life has changed so that we eat dinner with people we love and breakfast has become a luxury. Remember: the person who is willing to wake up to cook you breakfast is more dear than the person who cooks you noodles at night and then goes to bed.
At around noon the same day, after the seemingly mundane post was forwarded a few times, Weibo user Labixiaoqiu (辣笔小球 Là bǐ xiǎo qiú) wrote the following comment which ignited a firestorm of passion and fury in the comments that stretches over 20 pages.
This weib is originally mine, when you copy-pasted it could you not cite it? Weibo has the ability to forward things, just press a button, it’s not difficult.
The story then gets even weirder when Labixiaoqiu first asked for a lawyer to help represent her and next when she listed her demands for settling the lawsuit. Did she want money? Fame? A job? Nope. In a move reminiscent of Yao Ming’s lawsuit against Coca-Cola, the weibber asked for a compensation of a symbolic one yuan and 100 boxes of Jissbon condoms (Durex’s local competitor). As for her lawyer she stipulated they would similarly be compensated 0.5 yuan and 50 boxes of Jissbon.
Durex responded by posting an apology on their Weibo account, claiming an intern was responsible for the post, and offered her free products. Naturally, she refused and stuck to her guns and demanded to receive Jissbon.
As of tonight, however, it appears Labixiaoqiu has caved and accepted Durex brand condoms as compensation. According to her Weibo account, lawyers for both sides have met (what an awkward meeting that must’ve been) and an out-of-court settlement has been drawn up. The final price? 200 boxes of condoms and other freebies to Labixiaoqiu and her lawyers!
The kicker here is, as Labixiaoqiu is gleeful to point out, because she does not use condoms, she will be donating all of them to her fans! Talk about free publicity.
We don’t think Durex China cares too much though. They probably want to just put this situation behind them, though I imagine they’re also secretly
aroused excited about the influx of attention (I mean geez, even we’re writing about it).
You can check out the details of the settlement here (in Chinese).
