After Yao Ming retired a few months ago, rumors immediately began flying over his post-NBA plans. What appeared to be just wishful speculation at the time was that he would return to the homestead and study alongside his Chinese peers (and a handful of Shanghaiist interns) at Jiaotong University. Now we have it straight from the horse’s mouth:
Former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will study in the prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong University from October, his agent Zhang Mingji said here on Monday. Zhang said that Yao has not decided his major but the university will choose special teachers and give the super star lessons on a one-to-one basis.
He decided not to study in class with other students as his “appearance” could
wreak total havoc “affect” them. Instead, he will study from home with the aforementioned “special” teachers. He will start classes in October, and despite rumors that he would study finance, he is still undecided on a major.
Yao Ming himself claims “My level right now is probably about the same as a high school student” (“我现在的水平大概就高中生的样子吧”) because of his rigorous training and practice since childhood. Jiaotong U insists, however, that he will be subject to exactly the same requirements to graduate as every other student.
