Get out your pitchforks, it’s time to go hunt down a monster! Last week in Xiamen, photos surfaced showing a puppy being thrown into the sea and tenaciously swimming back to shore before being tossed in again by its cold-hearted owner.
The cruel scene unfolded Thursday last week on the Xiamen Baicheng city beach.
Tourists witnessed the entire event which started around 1pm when a young man walking a dog unexpectedly ran towards the shore and launched the dog into the ocean. Onlookers were shocked and approached the man to try to convince him to stop, but he ignored the cries of protests and yelled at those who dared question him.
After the fifth time of being hauled into the cold waters, the puppy eventually sought shelter on a rock outcropping. In danger of being swept away by the rising tide, the shivering dog was rescued from the encroaching waters by two volunteers on a pedalboat, risking sharp rocks to rescue the pup.
Upon finally reaching shore, the dog was swept into the arms of a young girl who calmed the dog and said she would take the dog home to keep as a pet.
Though this story has a happy ending, it stands as a sharp contrast between the love-hate relationship China has with dogs. Dog lovers in China have scored huge wins by recently shutting down the Jinhua Dog Meat Festival and earlier this year by rescuing 500 dogs packed on a truck on their way to the slaughterhouse, yet abandoned and stray dogs continue to plague cities around the nation as new pet owners have little idea what the responsibilities of a pet entail nor how to care for one properly.
As for the “pet owner” who wanted so desperately to get rid of his dog? Well obviously he walked away free, though we expect there to be a human flesh search soon enough.
