A group of senior citizens have taken it upon themselves to effect a mini-protest, by barricading Xikang Road near Xinhui Road in the Jing’an Temple district over a newly constructed high-rise that has robbed their homes of access to sunshine.
The collective of grandmas and pas are clutching white flags, which read “Return Our Sunshine,” though their specific plan of how to effect that outcome remains unclear. Do they want the high rise demolished? Mirrors installed? Compensation for their homes’ diminished property value?
Though the group numbers no more than two dozen, police undoubtedly now face the tricky challenge of defusing the situation with tact as the geriatrics have firmly placed themselves on their stools and wheelchairs in a line of solidarity stretching from curb to curb.
It might seem simple enough to disperse the group, seeing as many have conveniently provided their own forms of locomotion, yet we doubt the police are so willing to incur the wrath of their elders by wheeling them off against their will.
We also have to wonder why today was chosen as the protest, considering Shanghai has been overcast all day. Surely waiting a day or two for the sun to peek out would’ve been much more beneficial to their cause. As it is now, a few bewildered passersby were probably wondering why a group of crazy old people were raging at the sky.
