Chen Xianmei, the illiterate scrap peddler who picked up Foshan toddler Yueyue off the street, has fled the city after being overwhelmed by hundreds of media requests and random groups coming out of the woodwork to give her piles of cash.
Chen’s landlady even threatened to end her lease, due to the distraction of having media members lined up outside her apartment.
Perhaps most hurtful of all was the accusation from her neighbors that she only helped Yueyue to become famous.
Meanwhile, donations for Chen have been coming out of the woodwork, with one Dongguan home products company giving her 100,000RMB in cash, along with another 20,000RMB from the Foshan municipal government.
However, Chen visited the hospital to see Yueyue’s parents, in order to donate all the cash she had received for Yueyue’s medical care:
“I don’t even know how much this is. I’ve thinking only of the child, so I haven’t even counted the money given to me these past few days. I’ve brought it all for the child.”
Last night, Chen left for her hometown of Qingyuan (清远) in Guangdong, to reunite with her husband. Chen had been working in Foshan since 2009 to be with her children.
At 1:19 in the video below, it becomes quite apparent why Chen was eager to escape the media circus her life had become.
