The outpouring of sympathy and the flood of donations from around the nation has given Yueyue’s parents a major headache even as doctors continue to work overtime to save the life of the toddler caught in the Foshan double hit-and-run that has now made international headlines.
“So much money has come in. It’s like a boulder’s been placed on my heart,” Yueyue’s father Wang Chichang told Chinese reporters. Yet Wang has not used a single cent of the donations that have rolled in. “Children have given up their piggybanks to donate. How could I possibly spend this money frivolously?” he added.
To assure donors that every single cent was being accounted for, Wang invited journalists to accompany him as he made his way to the bank to open a special account for the donations. “I will give detailed accounts for every single cent that goes out from here so donors know where their money has gone,” said Wang.
The Guangdong Charity Federation reached out to Wang saying it would help him with the money. He says he has struggled with whether to say yes or not because he’s been hearing vehement voices of disapproval from Chinese netizens.
Because neither Wang nor his wife had their identity card on them, none of the banks they went to were willing to open an account for them. It was a while before Wang and the convoy of journalists found a bank that was willing to make a special allowance for him to open a bank account.
As bank staff counted the money, Wang scribbled on a sheet of paper the names of donors along with the amount each had given. He said, “There are these stacks of money, and then there are the donations from kids. Entire biscuit tins full of coins. Each of these coins is a heart. How could I not let them know where their money has gone?”
When they were finally done, Wang announced the total sum of donations — RMB270,100.40. “Please write the exact figure in your reports,” he exhorted the reporters. “Don’t write ‘over RMB270,000’.”
Wang promises that any money left over will be used for other children caught in similar circumstances, with full and transparent accounting. He would also announce at a later date whether he would allow the Guangdong Charity Federation to manage the money on his behalf, he said.
